Adjustable Beds and the end of 'Dads' Recliner?

If you were an avid TV watcher in the mid 90's you may remember NBC's long running TV show Frasier.  In this show there was a character, Martin Crane, Frasier's dad.  He was a witty, retired character that enjoyed the simple things and among them was his old, worn but ever so important recliner.  There were many episodes that revolved around the importance of this chair and when they tried to replace it with a new, better looking chair it still just wasn't the same and Martin always got his chair back.

Many of us probably share a similar story with Dad and 'his' chair, dare not try and sit in front of the TV with the remote in hand and cozying up in Dad's chair, this probably didn't last too long if Dad was home.

But now a new player has emerged and is threating these iconic chairs and not just for Dad but for all of us that enjoy a good book, whether it's a hard copy for those that remember what a hard copy is, or reading a book on our tablets.  The player is the adjustable bed.  These have erupted into the sleeping world.  Every manufacturer of beds is ensuring that their mattresses are capable of performing on an adjustable base.  Long thought of a tool for the elderly or for a person that had sustained an injury the adjustable base is now a lifestyle choice.

Adjustable bases offer a zero gravity setting that raises our legs and promotes circulation and relieves pressure.  So if you enjoy watching TV in your bedroom, reading a book or even have to stay up late to finish some last minute work assignment this offers a great solution for your comfort and ultimately is better for your health.

Fear not, for those that envision these adjustable bases as what they might see in the health care setting.  The manufacturers have recognized that the bedroom still demands a certain décor and many of them come with fabric options and can be set up with existing beds with their wall hugger technology.  Plus they have added all the fun stuff with USB ports for charging our devices, wireless remotes or Bluetooth so we can control them with our devices. Oh and my favourite the LED mood lighting, or night lite if it's for the kids room :)

Wondering, if the adjustable base will replace your favourite recliner?

Determine the right sleep for you!

Have you been waking up feeling less than energized?  The answer might be in your sleep quality and not sleep quantity.  But purchasing a new mattress is anything but exhilarating. The industry has become so inundated with technological terms and specs that it’s hard to know what you need from a mattress.  The most important thing in our opinion is finding your comfort profile. As you look at the four profiles below ask yourself the question; 'If you were in a living room without a bed where would you sleep?' On the floor, on the floor with a blanket down, on a sofa, on a sofa with pillows or in a recliner.

FIRM Profile- wanting a solid, flat, firm feeling under you while you sleep. Mattresses with this comfort level have less “give” when you turn in bed. Ideal for people who don’t like to feel that they are falling into bed or otherwise lying on an overly soft surface.
PLUSH Profile: wanting softer than the firm, but not as cushion-like as the Pillowtop.
PILLOWTOP Profile: wanting the most softness, with a cushiony feel. If you talk about luxurious, comfortable, soft “sleeping on a cloud” feeling. Note, the Pillowtop comfort level does not compromise on support underneath.
EUROTOP: only mentioned because you will hear this term but this is much like the Pillowtop, the difference between Eurotops and Pillowtops is mainly cosmetic, there is no comfort difference between Eurotops and Pillowtop.

Once you determine your comfort choice than you can look into the different types of sleep technologies available which are:  Innerspring, Pocketed Coil, Memory Foam, Latex and Hybrids (Pocket Coil with Latex Surface), below are some sample suggestions based on common problems we often hear from customers:

1)      WANTING A STILL SLEEP:
Be sure to look at Pocketed Coil, Memory Foam or Latex options these have the best motion separation.

2)      WANTING COOL SLEEP:
Latex is the most breathable material and allows you to sleep cooler.

3)      WANTING SUPPORT AND TEMPERATURE CONTROL :
Hybrids are ideal, the pocketed coils offer the centre support while latex provides the comfort of pressure relief.

4)      WANTING LONGEVITY:
Latex, rubber has a thicker cell wall which allows it to retain its shape and resist rupture better than foam.

5)      WANTING A BED FOR A GUEST ROOM:
Innerspring is sufficient and the coil count doesn’t have to be higher than 390.

6)      NURSING AN INJURY OR HEALTH ISSUES:
Adjustable beds are a great solution, the memory foam and latex mattresses work the best as they are able to handle the bending required, again the latex will retain it's shape better.

In the end when shopping for sleep, ‘Comfort is King’ the feeling you have when lying on a mattress outweighs everything. We recommend a 10 minute sleep test, lay down on a mattress and see how close you come to sleep in those 10 minutes, don’t worry someone will wake you eventually if it turns out to be the right bed but be sure not to book any important appointments that day. After all we do spend a 1/3 of our life in bed so we let's enjoy this decision!
